Fake News About Russia Sending Weapons to Taliban

Fake News About Russia Sending Weapons to Taliban

by Stephen Lendman

It would be fitting justice if the report was true.

Taliban roots go back to CIA-recruited, armed and supported Mujahideen fighters against Afghanistan’s Soviet occupiers in the 1980s.

Ronald Reagan called them “the moral equivalent of our founding fathers.” Today, they’re one of America’s mortal enemies.

Yesterday’s Mujahideen are now Taliban fighters, combating illegal US war and occupation of their country.

America’s longest war continues endlessly. According to the neocon/CIA-connected Washington Post, instead of ending what can’t be won, hundreds of US marines were deployed to Afghanistan’s Helmand province.

Many may return in body bags. Claiming their mission is training and other assistance belies the real purpose behind all US troop deployments to war zones - to participate directly or indirectly in fighting.

Taliban elements control most of Helmand province, along with much of the rest of the country. America’s longest war is a lost cause. US occupation one day will end because combating it will continue until the scourge of America’s presence is gone.

General John Nicholson Jr. heads US Forces Afghanistan (USFOR-A). He lied claiming “(w)e continue to get reports of” Russia supplying Taliban fighters with weapons.

“We support anyone who wants to help us advance the reconciliation process, but anyone who arms belligerents who perpetuate attacks like the one we saw two days ago in Mazar-i-Sharif is not the best way forward to a peaceful reconciliation.”

Fact: No evidence suggests Russian military involvement in Afghanistan - directly or indirectly.

Fact: The country is one of many victimized by US naked aggression - continuing since October 2001, less than a month post-9/11, war planned months in advance of the mother of all false flags.

Fact: America wants endless war, not “peaceful reconciliation” - an anathema notion to US warmakers and war-profiteers.

WaPo: “A senior US military official said the Russians have increased their supply of equipment and small arms to the Taliban over the past 18 months…including medium and heavy machine guns…under the guise (of) fight(ing) ISIS…”

Fact: The anonymous “senior US military official” provided no evidence supporting his baseless claim because none exists.

WaPo quoted Defense Secretary Mattis, saying “(a)ny weapons being funneled here from a foreign country would be a violation of international law unless they were coming to the Government of Afghanistan” - adding, the issue “would have to be dealt with…”

Fact: Weapons “funneled” to and used by America in Afghanistan and all its other war theaters are major “violation(s) of international law.” Mattis failed to explain.

In March, NATO commander US General Curtis Scaparrotti lied, claiming Moscow supports Taliban fighters. Russia’s Foreign Ministry dismissed the baseless allegation - saying it was made to provide cover for America’s lost war.

Nicholson and CENTOM head General Joseph Votel want thousands more US troops deployed to Afghanistan - for endless war, a lost cause, not with any hope for breaking what they call a “stalemate.”

Le Pen's Pro-Palestinian PM Choice

Le Pen’s Pro-Palestinian PM Choice

by Stephen Lendman

Ahead of the May 7 French presidential runoff, Marine Le Pen chose defeated Debout la France (Arise France) presidential candidate Nicolas Dupont-Aignan as her prime minister if elected.

He’s ideologically right-wing like herself. With him at a Saturday news conference, she said “(w)e will form a government of national unity that brings together people chosen for their competence and their love of France.”

Both support abandoning the euro, what Dupont-Aignan called a “racket,” and restoring the franc as France’s currency, regaining control over its monetary and fiscal policies from Brussels.

Former UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage called him an “utterly respectable Eurosceptic.” Dupont-Aignan said “I am and remain a free man. I have dared before history to build a government agreement.”

Unlike establishment figures throughout Europe and America, Dupont-Aignan is pro-Palestinian.

In July 2014, during Israeli aggression on Gaza, Dupont-Aignan said the following:

“Gaza: Nicolas Dupont-Aignan deplores the inertia of France in the conflict”

“After the bombing, ground fighting and unacceptable collateral damage of the deaths of hundreds of innocent civilians, men, women and children, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict entered last night in a new phase with the invasion of the gang Of Gaza by the Israeli army (with) complicit silence of the UN, the West and France. The disproportion of the forces involved is blatant.”

“Whatever the responsibilities of the irresponsible leaders of Hamas in the outbreak of this new confrontation, the path chosen by Israel only pushes it into an impasse.”

“It is not by accumulating the ruins and the dead that Mr. Netanyahu will appease the tensions, passions and hatreds in this region of the world.”

“In this bloody context, the inertia of France is perfectly scandalous. We expect our government to finally take the initiative for international action to impose Israel’s compliance with UN resolutions, that is, the withdrawal and dismantling of settlements illegally settled in the territories The recognition of the Palestinian state.”

“It is only under these conditions that we will avoid importing the conflict into our country, and that the new massacre in progress will be stopped.”

“It is only under these conditions that lasting peace can finally return to the Middle East. Letting aggravate and aggravate an unbearable situation is not only stupid but criminal.”

Fact: On July 8, 2014, Israel launched premeditated aggression on Gaza. Hamas had nothing to do with initiating it - planned by Israel, waged until August 26.

Thousands were killed or wounded. Defenseless civilians were willfully targeted. Entire neighborhoods were destroyed. Entire families were annihilated. Schools, hospitals, mosques and UN shelters were attacked.

So were clinics, ambulances, healthcare workers, journalists and human rights supporters. During the war, Israeli forces rampaged throughout the territories, invading over 3,000 homes, terrorizing families, traumatizing children, making mass arrests, including Palestinian parliamentarians.

Nearly three dozen were lawlessly imprisoned. Israeli aggression went way beyond attacking Hamas.

It was war on Palestine, vicious collective punishment, the highest of high crimes against peace. More Israeli aggression could happen anytime, likely worse than 2014 if launched.

Dupont-Aignan supports Palestinian self-determination. Le Pen said they share a “common project (they’ll) promote together.”

Macron backs continuity, dirty business as usual. Le Pen wants France out of US-dominated NATO and EU membership.

Macron is the choice of the “oligarchy,” she said. She wants French sovereign independence restored - free from control by Washington, Brussels and Berlin.

Trump Supports Terrorism

Trump Supports Terrorism

by Stephen Lendman

America is history’s greatest perpetrator of state-sponsored terrorism. Its so-called war on this scourge is a fabricated hoax. Its sordid record is longstanding, including:

  • genocidal war on Native Americans - continuing today against their culture and traditions;

  • enslavement of Black Africans;

  • its deplorable history of racism and Islamophobia - including mass incarceration of people of color and others most disadvantaged;

  • its aggression against numerous independent governments for regime change; and

  • support for groups like ISIS, Al Qaeda, and its Al Nusra offshoot.

Last September, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov accused the Obama administration of “de facto support for terrorism…us(ing) (it) as a weapon against Russia…show(ing) the political depths (his) administration stooped to (in) the Middle East…specifically (in) Syria.”

Candidate Trump lied, claiming he wanted ISIS smashed. As president, he’s continuing the same imperial policies as his predecessors, accelerating, instead of ending them - supporting ISIS and other terrorist groups instead halting US support and combating them.

In October, 2016, republished on April 28, Michel Chossudovsky discussed “US military aid…to Al Qaeda and ISIS-Daesh” in Syria, illicitly supplied - on the phony pretext of supporting nonexistent moderate rebels.

NATO, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, other Gulf states, Jordan and Israel are involved - supporting terrorist groups while pretending to oppose them.

Trump continues Obama’s war on Syria, elsewhere regionally and beyond - recruiting, arming, training, funding and directing anti-government terrorist groups, using them as imperial foot soldiers, wanting all independent governments replaced by pro-Western puppet ones.

In summer 2015, Iraqi lawmaker Alia Nusseif said “(w)e don’t have any trust in Americans anymore…ISIS is being used as a tool by America to divide and weaken Iraq.”

The same is true in Syria, Yemen, elsewhere regionally, and Afghanistan, including as a weapon against Russia.

On April 27, Bashar al-Assad said Trump’s policy toward Syria continues what Obama began.

He’s “doing what he is told to do by the CIA, the Pentagon and major oil companies.” His campaign promises were hollow.

He “has no policies.” US actions are “drawn by the American institutions which control the American regime which are the intelligence agencies, the Pentagon, the big arms and oil companies, and financial institutions, in addition to some other lobbies which influence American decision-making,” Assad stressed.

Like his predecessors, Trump “merely implements these policies, and the evidence is that when (he) tried to move on a different track, during and after his election campaign, he couldn’t” and didn’t.

“He came under a ferocious attack. As we have seen in the past few weeks, he changed his rhetoric completely and subjected himself to the terms of the deep American state, or the deep American regime.”

“That’s why it is unrealistic and a complete waste of time to make an assessment of the American President’s foreign policy, for he might say something, but he ultimately does what these institutions dictate to him.”

“This is not new. This has been ongoing American policy for decades…(T)he United States always seeks to control all the states of the world without exception,” Assad correctly explained.

It has interests, not allies, wanting all nations to be “American satellite(s)” - aiming to impose “hegemony on the world” by brute force.

Assad defined so-called “moderate terrorists” as anti-government fighters, committing “beheading(s) and slaughter…without carrying an Al-Qaeda (or ISIS) flag, or without saying ‘Allah Akbar.’ “

Terrorists serving US interests are called “moderate opposition” elements, “even if they commit” gruesome atrocities, Assad stressed.

Endless conflicts and instability serve US imperial interests. Media scoundrels suppress Trump’s support for terrorism.

His reckless agenda risks confrontation with Russia, China, North Korea and Iran. Possible nuclear war on his watch is humanity’s greatest threat.

Tillerson Threatens North Korea

Tillerson Threatens North Korea

by Stephen Lendman

America favors bullying over responsible diplomatic outreach, lying over truth-telling, dominance over mutual cooperation, war over peace.

Addressing Security Council members on Friday, Secretary of State Tillerson turned truth on its head, claiming years of US “well-intentioned diplomatic efforts to halt (North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile) programs have failed.”

“It is only by first dismantling them that there can be peace, stability, and economic prosperity for all of Northeast Asia.”

“With each successive detonation and missile test, North Korea pushes Northeast Asia and the world closer to instability and broader conflict.”

“The threat of a North Korean nuclear attack on Seoul, or Tokyo, is real. And it is likely only a matter of time before North Korea develops the capability to strike the US mainland.”

Fact: Washington never negotiated in good faith with North Korea since the Truman era.

Fact: America’s rage for dominance through endless wars and color revolutions threatens all sovereign independent countries.

Fact: North Korea sought nuclear and ballistic missile deterrence capabilities for defense to protect against possible US aggression.

Fact: No preemptive DPRK threat exists against any country - not America or any regional ones. Tillerson lied claiming otherwise.

Tillerson: “(F)or years,” Pyongyang “defie(d) multiple UN Security Council resolutions…(T)here is no reason to think (it) will change its behavior…”

Fact: “For years,” Washington rebuffed North Korea’s diplomatic outreach. Instead of extending recognition and welcoming it into the world community of nations, reckless US hostility persists.

Tillerson: “For too long, the international community has been reactive in addressing North Korea. Those days must come to an end.”

“Failing to act now on the most pressing security issue in the world may bring catastrophic consequences.”

'We have said this before and it bears repeating: the policy of strategic patience is over. Additional patience will only mean acceptance of a nuclear North Korea.”

Fact: America’s rage for wars and dominance is “the most pressing security issue in the world,” threatening “catastrophic consequences.”

Fact: North Korea wants nukes for defense, not offense.

Tillerson: “(T)he time has come for all of us to put pressure on North Korea to abandon its dangerous path.”

Fact: It’s time for the world community to renounce America’s war on humanity, threatening its survival.

Tillerson urged increased diplomatic and economic pressure on Pyongyang over responsible outreach.

Claiming America’s goal “is not regime change” is a bald-faced lie. So is saying US policy isn’t to “threaten North Korean people or destabilize the Asia Pacific region.

Millions of casualties, vast destruction, chaos and human misery attest to US ruthlessness. Its imperial madness threatens everyone.

As long as it exists, North Korea and other independent nations would be foolhardy to abandon whatever military deterrent they’re able to develop for self-defense. Otherwise they’re vulnerable to rape and destruction.

Tillerson’s solution is polar opposite what’s needed, wanting North Korea punished more than already - including political, economic and financial isolation, tougher sanctions, and other counterproductive measures.

He threatened war, saying “all options for responding to future provocations must remain on the table.”

Bullying won’t get Pyongyang to bend to Washington’s will. As long as it continues, catastrophic US-instigated nuclear war is possible.

China and Russia Prioritize Korean Peninsula Denuclearization, Peace and Stability

China and Russia Prioritize Korean Peninsula Denuclearization, Peace and Stability

by Stephen Lendman

During Friday’s Security Council session on North Korea, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed views far different from his US counterpart.

He stressed peace and stability through outreach, diplomacy and dialogue toward the goal of a denuclearized Korean peninsula.

Tillerson threatened war if Pyongyang fails to obey US diktats, upping the stakes for conflict over efforts to avoid it.

“We must stay committed to the goal of denuclearization,” said Wang. “It’s the basic precondition for long-term peace and stability on the peninsula, and what we must accomplish to safeguard the international nuclear non-proliferation regime.”

“The continued escalation of tensions on the Korean peninsula in the recent period has caused widespread concerns and worries…”

“If the issue…fails to be put under effective control and in the case of unexpected events, the situation is highly likely to take a drastic turn for the worse and spiral out of control.”

“We must stay committed to the path of dialogue and negotiation. The use of force does not resolve differences, and will only lead to bigger disasters.”

The only solution for all parties is “dialogue and negotiation. Our past experience…on the peninsula shows whenever (they’re) ongoing, the situation…maintain(s) basic stability,” essential to pursue now.

During Friday’s ministerial-level Security Council session on North Korea, Pyongyang launched a reported failed ballistic missile test - a message of determination not to surrender to US-led Western demands.

Trump tweeted “North Korea disrespected the wishes of China…Bad!” US Pacific Command said the missile didn’t leave DPRK territory.

An unnamed Trump administration official said plans for tougher sanctions on Pyongyang “could be sped up. Something that’s ready to go could be taken from the larger package and expedited.”

On Thursday, Trump warned of a possible “major, major conflict” with North Korea. At the Security Council on Friday, Tillerson said further DPRK nuclear and ballistic missile tests could lead to “catastrophic consequences.”

China and Russia want war avoided. On Friday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said use of force on the Korean peninsula is “absolutely unacceptable as it is fraught with disastrous consequences” for the entire region.

“It would be no exaggeration to say that the regional peace has been seriously tested recently while the risk still remains that the confrontation will lead to military escalation,” he stressed.

“(A)ny thoughtless step (could) result in terrible consequences.’ Gatilov warned against imposing sanctions able to “stifle North Korea economically or deteriorate the humanitarian situation in the country.”

Resolving things can only be achieved by “constructive talks on the existing problems,” he explained. Washington prefers sticks, not carrots.

US-launched war on the Korean peninsula remains an ominous possibility - given Washington’s rage for conflict over responsible outreach, diplomacy and dialogue.

US Troops Deployed Along Syrian/Turkish Border

US Troops Deployed Along Syrian/Turkish Border

by Stephen Lendman

Hundreds of US forces operate illegally in Syrian territory without government permission.

They’re allied with ISIS, Al Nusra, likeminded terrorists and Kurdish YPG fighters, supported by Pentagon terror-bombing of infrastructure and government sites - on the phony pretext of combatting ISIS America created and supports.

According to an unnamed YPG source, “(w)e have discussed with the United States moves needed to be made to prevent the Turkish Armed Forces from potentially launching attacks against us.”

“We have told the US that if Turkey attacks our troops once again, we will pull out of the Raqqa operation and deploy all of our forces to the border. For its part, the US has promised to make every effort to stop further assaults.”

Days earlier, Turkish warplanes terror-bombed Kurdish areas in northern Syria and Iraq, killing YPG fighters and civilians, wounding others.

A YPG statement called what happened a “treacherous attack.” Erdogan was unapologetic, saying Turkish military operations will continue “until the last terrorist is eliminated.”

His “terrorist(s)” are US foot soldiers, along with ISIS, Al Nusra and similar groups.

In response to Turkish airstrikes, unknown numbers of US forces reportedly were deployed along the Syrian/Turkish border from Kobani to Karkamis.

Ankara reinforced its own border positions, illegally in Syrian territory since last August.

According to AP News, “US (troops and) armored vehicles (were) deploy(ed) in areas in northern Syria” - a few hundred meters from Turkey’s border.

Online video footage “showed a convoy of US armored vehicles driving on a rural road in the village of Darbasiyah…”

“A senior Kurdish official, Ilham Ahmad, told The Associated Press that American forces began carrying out patrols along the border Thursday along with reconnaissance flights in the area.”

Pentagon spokesman Navy Capt. Jeff Davis confirmed the presence of US forces in Syria, close to Turkey’s border - without explaining they support anti-government terrorists.

Washington wants Syrian sovereignty destroyed, Assad ousted, replaced by pro-Western puppet rule, the nation balkanized, its resources stolen, its people exploited - a scheme for endless conflict, chaos and human misery.

Russia’s good faith conflict resolution efforts since 2012 failed because Washington undermined them.

Trump escalated Obama’s war. Peace talks in Geneva and Astana, Kazakhstan achieved nothing so far. Like earlier efforts, they’re doom to fail.

The only chance for conflict resolution is continued liberation of areas held by US-supported terrorists, weakening them enough to make peace possible - some day, no time soon.

100 US Senators Want Israeli High Crimes Suppressed

100 US Senators Want Israeli High Crimes Suppressed

by Stephen Lendman

In an April 27 letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, all US senators demanded the world body ignore Israeli high crimes, calling truth-telling “anti-Semiti(c).”

“Too often, the UN is exploited as a vehicle for targeting Israel,” they said.

Fact: Much more needs to be done to hold Israel accountable for high crimes of war and against humanity - for decades of ruthlessly persecuting Palestinians, for committing slow-motion genocide, for attacking its neighbors.

The letter quoted neocon US UN envoy Nikki Haley, saying “(i)t is the UN’s anti-Israel bias that is long overdue for change” - an outrageous perversion of truth.

The senators praised the world body “for disavowing” the important Richard Falk/Virginia Tilley report, calling Israel a racist apartheid regime - “beyond a reasonable doubt.”

The entire US Senate urged the UN “to improve (its) treatment of Israel…” It demands no world body support for the vital global BDS initiative - or any other actions hostile to Israeli interests.

It wants information about its human rights abuses suppressed. It demands support for US interests. It calls truth-telling anti-Israeli “bias.”

All 100 US senators disgracefully signed the letter. Washington and Israel partner in each other’s high crimes - a ruthless axis of evil threatening humanity.

Last week, Haley accused the world body of holding “Israel-bashing sessions.” Ignoring US wars in multiple theaters, she lied claiming “Iran is using Hezbollah to advance its regional aspirations.”

“They are working together to expand extremist ideologies in the Middle East. That is a threat that should be dominating our discussion at the Security Council.”

Iran threatens no one. Neither does Hezbollah. Haley turned truth on its head. So did Tillerson days earlier, irresponsibly accusing Tehran of “alarming ongoing provocations” to destabilize regional countries.

Iranian UN envoy Gholamali Khoshroo debunked his remarks, calling them “misleading propaganda…”

Last week Washington asked which Middle East countries benefit from regional chaos, “and what are the connections between terrorist groups and these states?”

Israel, of course, benefits most. So does America by its belligerent presence in a part of the world not its own - waging endless wars of aggression, supporting terrorist groups it created, wanting pro-Western puppet rule replacing all sovereign independent governments.

Cashing In: Obama's Post-Presidency Bonanza

Cashing In: Obama’s Post-Presidency Bonanza

by Stephen Lendman

The benefits of being a former US president are limitless. Most former incumbents take full advantage.

Obama is using his political celebrity to cash in hugely. He moved into a reported $5.3 million, 8,200-square foot luxury mansion, two miles from the White House.

He spent weeks vacationing in Tahiti, including aboard a $300 million yacht. He and wife Michelle got a stunning $65 million book deal, ghost written for them.

He’s already wealthy from earlier book deals. He earned $400,000 annually as US president, $200,000 each year in pension benefits - plus $150,000 a year for two-and-a-half years, then $96,000 annually for life, adjusted for inflation.

Nice deal if you can get it. There’s potentially much more, including $400,000 for paid speeches to lots of corporations and groups willing to pay it.

He’s getting this amount to keynote a September healthcare conference, organized by Wall Street firm Cantor Fitzgerald.

Hillary was paid over $25 million in speaking fees since January 2014. Husband Bill cashed in the same way.

So did former Wall Street-controlled Fed chairmen Alan Greenspan and Ben Bernanke. Political figures notoriously cash in big while in office and after leaving, Obama taking full advantage like many others.

The Los Angeles Times called it “(t)acky but not corrupt.” The NYT said he “balances civic-minded(ness) with the lure of” big bucks.

Concern for America’s poor and disadvantaged was never an Obama attribute. During his Chicago years, he supported ethnic cleansing gentrification.

Real estate and other financials interests profited hugely at the expense of ordinary people. His disdain for populism continued as a state and US senator.

He consistently promised one thing and delivered another - at the local, state and federal levels, mostly after becoming president.

Now a private citizen in his mid-50s, he’s got lots of years to get super-rich - living the good life, anti-progressive in office and since leaving, unaccountable for war crimes in multiple theaters, along with waging war on freedom domestically.

Trump's Deplorable First 100 Days

Trump’s Deplorable First 100 Days

by Stephen Lendman

Saturday, April 29, is his 100th day in office. He’s off to a deplorable start, the worst likely ahead.

A White House press release (WHPR) turned truth on its head, praising what demands condemnation.

WHPR: Trump prioritized “putting America first (and) protecting national security…”

Fact: He’s consistently put America first for its wealthy, powerful and privileged exclusively - no one else.

Fact: National security needs no special protection at a time America’s only enemies are ones it invents - to destructively advance its imperium.

WHPR: Trump wants an additional $54 billion for so-called “defense.”

Fact: He wants it for warmaking, toppling independent governments, and enriching war-profiteers.

WHPR: He “stood up to countries that have threatened our national security after years of failed diplomacy.”

Fact: No countries anywhere threaten America. Washington’s rogue agenda threatens humanity’s survival.

WHPR: Trump “(s)ent a message to the world with his swift and decisive order to strike the Syrian air base that launched a horrific chemical weapons attack on innocent civilians.”

Fact: Trump authorized naked aggression against a sovereign state based on a Big Lie. At no time throughout over six years of war, did Syria use CWs. No evidence suggests otherwise.

WHPR: Trump “(f)urther isolated Syria and Russia at the United Nations through successful diplomacy with President Xi Jinping of China.”

Fact: Both countries have an enduring partnership. China’s Xi Jinping calls it unbreakable. According to his chief of staff Li Zhanshu, “Chinese-Russian relations are going through their best period in our history.”

Fact: Bilateral ties are solid, despite serious international challenges and efforts by rogue US officials to disrupt them. Trump’s White House lied claiming otherwise.

WHPR: He “(i)mposed sanctions on Syria for its use of chemical weapons against innocent civilians.”

Fact: Illegal sanctions were unilaterally imposed based on a Big Lie. No Syrian use of CWs occurred.

WHPR: He “(i)mposed sanctions on Iran for violating an international agreement that restricts its ballistic missile program.”

Fact: Iran’s ballistic missile program is entirely legitimate, violating no international or any other agreement.

WHPR: He “(w)orked to isolate North Korea and repositioned military assets to confront the regime’s provocative missile tests.”

Fact: His Korean peninsula brinksmanship risks unthinkable nuclear war, the ultimate nightmarish scenario.

The White House boasted about meeting with an array of world leaders - including brutal Israeli, Saudi and Egyptian despots.

Trump’s so-called border protection scheme is racist and illegitimate. His proposed southern border wall offends Mexico, will cost billions of dollars if built, and will accomplish little.

His domestic policies aim to make America more of a police state than already. He supports monied interests exclusively. His foreign policy risks humanity-destroying nuclear war.

His deplorable first 100 days suggests greater horrors ahead. He’s a rogue actor, serving wealth, power and privilege at the expense of most others at home and abroad - at the same time, threatening world peace.

China v. US on North Korea

China v. US on North Korea

by Stephen Lendman

On April 26, a Trump administration statement said he “aims to pressure North Korea into dismantling its nuclear, ballistic missile, and proliferation programs by tightening economic sanctions and pursuing diplomatic measures with our Allies and regional partners.”

Instead of a military option, it said he seeks dialogue and diplomacy to achieve “peaceful denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.”

Interviewed by Reuters on Thursday, his comments were disturbingly different, saying “(t)here is a chance that we could end up having a major, major conflict with North Korea. Absolutely.”

We’d love to solve things diplomatically but it's very difficult.” He called the DPRK his biggest global challenge - “an urgent national security threat and top foreign policy priority,” according to administration officials.

On April 28, China’s People’s Daily headlined “China draws red line for North Korea issue: war is not allowed,” saying:

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi talked tough on the North Korea issue, ruling out war. It’s “not acceptable,” he said.

“The Korean Peninsula is not the Middle East. If war breaks out, the consequences would be unimaginable.”

China’s position is firm, Korean peninsula denuclearization its aim, diplomacy and dialogue its way of resolving things.

Provocative US/South Korean military exercises violate “the spirit of (Security) Council resolutions,” Wang stressed.

Beijing will continue playing a constructive role in dealing with all parties. Its “red line” is war is unacceptable.

On April 27, China’s Global Times (GT) said Pyongyang’s nuclear tests “100 kilometers from (its) border…threatens” its northeast region.

Its nuclear and ballistic missile programs “giv(e) Washington an excuse to enhance its military deployment in the region…China cannot be a bystander.”

Beijing and Washington are world’s apart on resolving things. “(T)hey share common interests in opposing Pyongyang developing nuclear and missile technologies,” said GT.

If the “nuclear issue boils over…war…is unavoidable…If China does not tackle the conundrum now, it will face more difficult choices in the future.”

Its government wants cooperation by all parties - Pyongyang suspending its nuclear tests, Washington and South Korea halting provocative joint military exercises, diplomacy and dialogue over military confrontation.

If Beijing fails to achieve its objectives, it’s able “to strike back at any side that crosses (its) red line,” GT stressed.

The Korean peninsula remains a dangerous flashpoint. Trump’s rage for war makes anything possible.

A Final Comment

On Friday, Secretary of State Tillerson will chair a special Security Council session on North Korea.

According to acting State Department spokesman Mark Toner on Monday (now succeeded by Fox News host Heather Nauert):

The meeting will give Security Council members an opportunity to discuss ways to maximize the impact of existing Security Council measures and show their resolve to respond to further provocations with appropriate new measures.”

“The DPRK poses one of the gravest threats to international peace and security through its pursuit of nuclear weapons, ballistic missiles, and other weapons of mass destruction as well as its other prohibited activities.”

America and its rogue allies alone pose regional and global threats. The North Korean “conundrum” isn’t going away any time soon.
